October 2010 - Report by 4G Americas4G Americas, a wireless industry trade association representing the 3GPP family of technologies, today reports that it has published a white paper that provides a technical and practical analysis of SMS as a means to contact Emergency Services. The report titled, Texting to 9-1-1: Examining the Design and Limitations of SMS, presents a view of the capabilities, limitations, threats and vulnerabilities of this means of text communications for emergency networks. "..SMS has significant limitations and shortcomings that do not make SMS suitable for emergency communications, especially under life-threatening conditions,” stated Chris Pearson, President of 4G Americas.

Originally the digital Tetra radios were expected to be the primary notification tool, with paging as a secondary system. However in the two years since the commissioning of the system the paging direct to Infostream digital pagers is now the primary messaging platform for the entire plant.

The EAS performance for 2008/09 resulted in an overall success rate of 99.99% against its target of 99.95%. The EAS is a dedicated messaging system which enables the Country Fire Authority (CFA), State Emergency Service (SES) and Ambulance Victoria (AV) regional emergency services staff and volunteers to be simultaneously alerted to incidents and provided with text messages by means of pocket pagers. |
